North American Native Art: |
In recent years Native American arts have become commodities collected and marketed by nonindigenous Americans and Europeans. Originally, these objects were produced in different cultural contexts and for altogether different purposes. In many cases native peoples endowed utilitarian objects with aesthetic qualities not strictly related to the objects' primary function. In addition, some groups produced articles symbolizing status positions or items of religious significance. |
Jemez StoryTeller |
The story telling sessions began after an evening meal. It might be a story of a long past hunting trip or a tale of the search for a great leader. Though these story times are no longer as frequent, many keep the tradition alive. Each generation saw to it that the oral traditions were passed on virtually unchanged, for numbers of years.
This Native American tradition is kept alive by pottery figurines called "Story Tellers." Each StoryTeller is handmade and individually handcrafted and hand painted in traditional earth colors and designs.
The tradition is that StoryTellers will bring good luck to the home or person it is placed with.

FETISHES
Native American's have used fetishes throughout recorded history, especially the Indians of the Southwest. A fetish is an object which is believed to have magic power. Fetishes may be of any form or material, but they all have one purpose - to assist man against any real or potential problems. The problems can be those of the mind, body or universe. |
